When was United Way formed?
The first United Way was formed in Denver, Colorado
in 1887. United Way came to Montreal and Toronto, Canada
in 1917. United Way Ajax-Pickering was patented in
1970. The adoption of the name United Way didn’t
form until 1973. In 2002, United Way Canada – Centraide
approved the expansion of United Way Ajax-Pickering
to include the Township of Uxbridge, and their name
now reflects that change: United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge.

Who approves United Way’s operating budget?
United Way’s operating budget is approved by
a volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of local business
people.
What are United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge’s operating costs?
United Way of APU’s fundraising and administration
cost are 17%. The national average of other charities
is 26%.
How does United Way afford to pay for its advertising?
Promotional space on television, radio or in the newspaper
is sought out as a donation or sponsored piece whenever
possible. Paid advertisements are usually attained
for price reductions.
Why do some agencies have their own fundraising drives if they’re funded
by United Way?
United Way does not provide 100% funding to any of
its agencies. Funding is program specific and based
on a hierarchy of need for the program in the community.
Why does the campaign goal keep going up?
With the rapid changes in the community including:
growth in population, housing crisis, the number of
seniors in need of service increasing and changes in
family structure, the need for human services continually
rises every year.
