AJAX, ON United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge has announced that John Wiersma, retired President & CEO of Veridian Corporation and outstanding community volunteer, will chair their 2005 campaign. Rolf Ott, President of Shobrook Gardens Ltd., will hold the Co-Chair position in Uxbridge for his second year.

"I am excited about leading this year’s United Way Campaign,” said John. “Strong communities are built when people start caring about their neighbours.  United Way is uniquely positioned to engage people to become more community minded.  By being engaged and giving to those that need a helping hand, we experience personal growth.”  

Among the many people considered for the position, John has an outstanding background in the community and his past volunteer experiences & awards ensure that he’s the man for the job. John worked in the electricity sector for more than 37 years and he continued as Chair of the Board of Directors of Veridian Corporation following his retirement in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed by the Minister of Energy to the Board of Directors of the Independent Electricity System Operator. He has also been involved in leadership roles in the community and his church. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Rouge Valley Health System and is a Past President of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade.

In John’s term as Campaign Chair he intends to increase the corporate sector donations by 10 per cent, developing two new workplace campaigns in Major Corporations and developing four new workplace campaigns in the Large Industrial sector. He also hopes to increase the participation of the public sector by 5 per cent at all levels.

The Mayors of Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge, Steve Parish, Dave Ryan and Gerri Lynn O’Connor have accepted the roles of Honourary Chairs.

Other volunteer members of the cabinet include: Emma Aquilino, Elana Arthurs, Margaret Bishop, Rhoda Brands-Stuart, Sheila Entwistle, Ken Gallen, Mark Guinto, Brian Heddle, Nindi Kang, Kim Kranc, John Lewis, Craig Marshall, Rita Moulton, Carolyn Porter, Eric Preston, Paul Rosebush, Saida VanStaveren, Bradley Ward and Doug Wellman. All members represent a divers group of business representatives working and/or living in Ajax, Pickering or Uxbridge.
