United Way Showcases Community Culture Through Taste-tour

AJAX, ON – United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge is “kicking-off” their 35th annual fundraising campaign on Saturday September 10th from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Ajax Community Centre – HMS Ajax Room. This year’s theme is Bon Appétit, a “taste-tour” of the community’s local restaurants.

“This is the first year we are doing this type of event, but what a great way to experience the culture of our community,” says United Way’s Executive Director Edna Klazek. “Since our main focus this year is on neighbours, we want to put our focus on things that neighbours share: fun, food and friendship.”

The participating restaurants include: Black Dog Pub, Casey’s Bar & Grill/East Side Mario’s, Debby’s Finger Lickin, Embassy Restaurant, Lone Star Café, Mandarin Restaurant, Montana’s Cookhouse, Noble Culinary Creations Catering, Rotilicious, Red House Thai Restaurant, Sakura Sushi Japanese Restaurant, Serve and Cater, Spices Restaurant, Topper’s Pizza and Tucker’s Market Place.

The event will be emceed by Melissa Forsythe on-air personality from 1350 CKDO. Speakers will include Mayor Parish; John Wiersma, Chair of the 2005 Campaign and Edna Klazek.

Face painting will be done by Girls Incorporated; Henna Tattoos, Sparky the Fire Dog and Grimace of McDonalds will provide a fun environment for the whole family.

The fundraising goal for the 2005 campaign will be announced at the kick-off. “Our primary goal is to help as many people as we can,” Klazek commented. “With increased participation from the community, our tag line will serve true: ‘Neighbours helping neighbours is the United Way’ ”.
